The right hedge can be an ideal garden boundary, but the wrong hedge may bring problems with it.
There is no maximum height that a hedge is allowed to be. Instead, each hedge is assessed on how it affects a neighbouring garden. This will depend on:
- How large the garden is that is affected by the hedge
- Which direction the affected garden faces
- How long the hedge is
- Whether the affected garden slopes lower or higher than the land where the hedge is growing.
Try to resolve the problem yourself
It's always best to try to sort out the hedge problem with your neighbour than reporting it to us.
You can also get advice on how to avoid hedge problems, complaints and neighbour disputes.
Keep a record of when you have approached your neighbour about the hedge and the response you have received.
If you can't sort the problem out, you can download and complete the high hedge complaint form and return it to us together with the correct fee.
If you wish to discuss or submit a high hedge complaint form, please email environmental.protection@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or call 01530 454545
We can only consider a high hedge if it is an evergreen or semi-evergreen.
