If you have entered a fixed period shorthold agreement you are liable to pay the rent for that period.
However it may be possible to come to an arrangement with the landlord to shorten the tenancy. It is vital that you get this in writing together with any terms or conditions to the agreement. Be aware of clauses that may appear to agree to a shortening of the tenancy but which leave you liable to pay the rent up to the point where a new tenant is found.
If you are on a rolled over tenancy you only need to give 1 months notice.
