Why Physical Activity is Important for Families?
Being active as a family is another way to spend some quality time together. When the whole family is more physically active together, everyone benefits from helping to maintain a healthy weight, reducing stress, and lowering the risks of heart disease and other serious conditions.
It is important to remember there are differnet physical activity recomendations for different age groups.
- Under 5s - Under 1 should be doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity across the day (tummy/floor time). 1-5 years should be doing 180 minutes (3 hours) of physical activity per day.
- Children & Young People (5-18 years old) - aim to take part in at least 60 minutes physical activity per day, every day of the week.
- Children & Young People (5-18 years old) with disabilities - aim to be active for 20 minutes per day, every day of the week.
- Adults & Older Adults - aim to take part in 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This is also recommended for adults and older adults with disabilities.
Creating activities for the whole family is a good way to stay motivated and keep everyone involved. There are lots of ways families can have fun and make special memories, whilst fitting in their daily physical activity.
