WW1 Books
Working with the North West Leicestershire Heritage Forum, we have been involved in a special project that remembers servicemen in the district who died in service during the First World War.
The memorial books contain the names of more than 700 men who enlisted during the war between 1914 and 1918.
The first three books were officially launched in July 2014 by Jennifer, Lady Gretton JP, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire.
The fourth book covering Moira and district (Acresford, Albert Village, Donisthorpe, Moira, Oakthorpe and Overseal) has now been published, and is available to purchase from Moira Furnace
The remaining book for Coalville, due to the amount of of men who lost their lives serving their country, means that this edition is still being worked on, and will in fact be published as two books. More information will follow in due course.
Researchers
The project took a vast amount of research and time dedicated to finding out about the men. This work was carried out by volunteers in the different areas, led by:
Northern parishes: Nikki Hening
Ashby and surrounding areas: Ken Hillier
Ibstock and surrounding areas: Ian Vickers
Moira and district: Pete Smith and Helen Shepherd
Coalville: Denis Baker
