The Government requires local planning authorities to assess the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers and Travelling Showpeople and to meet those needs through the identification of land for suitable sites. Our current level of need has been identified in the 2017 Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showpeople Accommodation Assessment (PDF Document, 2.48 Mb), which we have undertaken jointly with Leicester City Council and the other Leicestershire authorities (except Hinckley and Bosworth).
It was the Council’s intention to plan to meet the identified need through the production of a specific Gypsy and Traveller Site Allocation Development Plan Document (DPD). However it was agreed at a meeting of the Council's Local Plan Advisory Committee on 7 November 2018 that the needs of Gypsies and Travellers should now be addressed as part of the Local Plan review rather than through a separate Development Plan Document.

Current work
To underpin the Local Plan Review, we have commissioned an update to the 2017 Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showpeople Accommodation Assessment. We are also continuing our own search for potential suitable sites.
