The Leicestershire County Council elections will take place on Thursday 1 May 2025.

Standing for election

If you would like to stand as a candidate in this election, you must submit a valid nomination form by 4pm 2 April to the Deputy Returning Officer at Stenson House, London Road, Coalville, LE67 3FN. You should make an appointment to do this, where an informal check of your papers will be offered.

Nomination forms can be found on the Electoral Commission website, or a pack can be requested from the Electoral Services office.

To vote in at this election you must be:

• registered to vote,
• 18 years or over on polling day
• a British citizen, an Irish citizen, a Commonwealth citizen who has leave to enter or remain in the UK, or who does not require such leave.
• or you are either a citizen of:
  • Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain who is resident in the UK, has permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, or who does not need permission
  • any other EU country who on or before 31 December 2020 was legally resident in the UK, had permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, or who did not need permission, and this has continued without a break
• not be subject to any legal incapacity to vote

Postal voting 

If you require a postal vote at this election, please visit our dedicated postal voting page for more information. 

The deadline to apply for a postal vote, or to cancel or amend an existing postal vote at this election is 5pm Monday 14 April.

Postal vote despatch dates

• If you already have a postal vote or successfully applied by 17 March 2025, your pack will be sent from 14 April.
• If you successfully apply after 17 March 2025 up to 5pm on 14 April, your pack will be sent from 22 April.

Please allow time for delivery. If your postal vote hasn’t arrived within a reasonable timeframe, contact us. Replacement packs can only be issued from Friday 25 April until 5pm on Thursday 1 May.

New postal vote handling rules

Please note that there are new rules around handling postal votes. There will be a limit on the number of postal votes a person can hand in at a polling station or at the Council Offices– you will not be allowed to hand in more than five postal ballot packs for other electors plus your own (6 in total). 

If a person hands in more than five postal ballot packs for other electors, all the postal votes (other than their own) will be rejected.

Anyone handing in postal votes will need to complete a ‘return of postal voting documents’ form.

We therefore can no longer accept postal votes left in the letter box at the council offices. Any postal votes which are left at any council building without the ‘return of postal voting documents’ form being completed will be rejected.

We would therefore recommend that postal votes are returned to us via Royal Mail as soon as possible before polling day.

Proxy voting

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm Wednesday 23 April.

If after 5pm 23 April you find yourself unable to vote in person, due to medical or work reasons, you may be entitled to apply for an emergency proxy vote. Please contact the Electoral Services team on 01530 454512. 

Poll cards

Poll cards are due to be delivered from 24 March. If you have not received your poll card by 8 April, please contact the Electoral Services team on 01530 454512.

Voter Identification 

It is now a requirement to present an accepted form of photographic identification when voting at the polling station.
